Frugal Tip: Best Time to Buy

  • Best time to go to a restaurant: Tuesday night. Restaurants are least crowded on this day and will offer their best deals (like "kid's eat free").
  • Best time to go to the grocery store - Wednesday. For most grocery stores, Wednesday is the start of the week so you can get a good discount on the previous week's items. Not all stores have the same schedule so ask your store when they do their markdowns.
  • Best time to book a hotel room: Sunday at 4pm. You should call the hotel directly, not the 800 reservations number and not through an online site. Tell the manager you are shopping for a great rate and ask what they can do for you.
  • Best time to book a flight: Tuesday afternoon. Most major airlines announce their sales on Monday nights and this triggers other airlines to try and match those discounted prices on Tuesdays. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are usually the cheapest days to fly. The earliest flight is the most cost-effective followed by lunchtime or dinnertime.
  • Best time to buy a car: Last Tues or Weds of the month. Salesmen are interested in meeting their sales quota for the month and are more willing to "deal". The best time of year to buy a car is from Sept to Dec when you can expect to save 10-20% on the previous year's model. If you can hold off until the end of December, your savings will be even larger.
